In April 2006, UNGIS (United Nations Group on the Information Society) was endorsed by the UN-Chief Executives Board (CEB) as the new inter-agency mechanism with the main objective to coordinate substantive and policy issues facing the United Nations’ implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

UNGIS Contribution to the RIO+20 Preparatory Process

Following on the recommendations of its 7th meeting that took place in Geneva in May 2011, UNGIS agreed to present a joint contribution to the preparatory process of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO+20). In response to the call for contributions by the RIO+20 secretariat, UNGIS has prepared a contribution highlighting the relevant aspects of ICTs and Information Society to help achieve a green economy and sustainable development.

This session, organised by the UNGIS, World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), and Peru, will address the two major challenges of advancing the world’s digital transformation: enabling universal meaningful connectivity and developing the competencies to address related risks and to harness its opportunities across UNGIS’ fields of competence.

WSIS towards Summit of the Future and Beyond

UNGIS SIDE EVENT @ HLPF 2024

Aligned with the High-Level Political Forum 2024 theme on Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions, this side event seeks to amplify the importance of digital governance and cooperation as essential components for achieving the 2030 Agenda. Further, it aims to enhance understanding about WSIS and its role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognizing impactful and existing digital governance processes, such as WSIS, that have shaped the technological landscape, this side event will also foster discussions on the forthcoming WSIS+20 review.
